What is an Endpoint, and what is Managed Endpoint Services?

Devices | Patching | Monitoring | Endpoint Security

An endpoint is any device that connects to your network and is used to reach your data and applications. Managed Endpoint Services means handing responsibility for keeping those devices patched, protected and healthy to a specialist provider for a predictable monthly fee.

So what counts as an endpoint?

If someone can log in from it, or it holds or moves your data, it is an endpoint.

  • Laptops and desktops — the everyday devices your team works on, in the office or at home.
  • Servers — on-premises or hosted, running the applications and files everyone depends on.
  • Tablets and mobile phones — increasingly used to access email, documents and business systems.
  • Specialist devices — point-of-sale terminals, tills, kiosks, printers and connected equipment.

Why endpoints matter so much

Endpoints sit exactly where people, data and the internet meet, which makes them the most common way an attack gets in. A single unpatched laptop or a device without working antivirus is usually all a phishing email or ransomware campaign needs. Endpoints are also where downtime is felt first: when a device fails, someone stops working immediately.

What Managed Endpoint Services covers

The detail varies by provider, but the core disciplines are consistent.

  • Monitoring — continuous visibility of device health, disk space, performance and failures before they become outages.
  • Patch management — operating system and application updates applied on a schedule, then verified.
  • Endpoint security — antivirus and anti-malware deployed, kept current and centrally monitored.
  • Asset visibility — an accurate inventory of what you own, what it runs and when it needs replacing.
  • Backup alignment — making sure device data is actually protected and recoverable.
  • Support and maintenance — a named point of contact for setup, changes, faults and replacements.

Does your business need it?

It is usually worth it once you have more devices than anyone can reasonably keep track of by hand, once staff work from more than one location, or once you handle customer or personal data. Consistent, documented endpoint controls are also a practical requirement on the road to UK Cyber Essentials and GDPR compliance.
